American University PhD study is expected to take a minimum of four years. The first year of the program consists of intensive formal course work that prepares the student for his own research. Upon completion of the course work, an individual student research thesis program is assigned based on approved topics in the field of study and in-line with the priorities of the University. As a part of the program requirements, participants publish their research in an international refereed journal.

On entry you must have the following:

  • 10 years work experience with 5 years or more in managerial level with relevant Masters degree – either an MBA or an MSc in their respective fields of study.
  • If English is not your first language and if you have not studied in English for your Masters degree, you must also provide evidence of competence in English language in the form of an IELTS/TOEFL score.

MODULE 1 – Introduction to PhD Research

Module one considers some of the more practical fundamentals of PhD research.

This module is divided into four units:

MODULE 2 – Quantitative Methods and Analysis

The overall aim of this module is to introduce candidates to the techniques of quantitative research and to discuss issues relating to quantitative research design, implementation and quantitative data analysis.

MODULE 3 – Qualitative Methods and Analysis

The aim of this module is to provide a thorough introduction to all aspects of qualitative research. Throughout the module we have endeavoured to offer practical examples of how the techniques are used in actual research projects.

Stage 1 – Project proposal

  • The scholar should prepare a project proposal (maximum 5 to 7 pages) which contains topic and title of the study

Stage 2 – Synopsis stage

  • The scholar should prepare a draft of the proposal which expanded to 15 to 20 pages and contains the same chapters in a detailed draft as in the project proposal from the stage one.
  • Once the synopsis has been reviewed by the university, the scholar should present synopsis and defend in front of the academic panel.
  • Upon successful presentation and interaction the synopsis has been approved successfully and the scholar can continue his research to the thesis stage.

Stage 3 – Thesis stage

  • The scholar should prepare the final thesis (DISSERTATION) of minimum of sixty thousand words.
  • A thesis is an elaborative presentation of the entire research work which contains the chapters are as follows.

  2. Literature Review
  3. Research Methodology
  4. Data Analysis and Interpretation
  5. Findings and Conclusions
  6. Suggestions and Recommendation
  7. Bibliography and Appendices.

Stage 4 – Articles Publications

  •  The scholar must prepare a minimum of two articles and it should be published in international journals either SSCI indexed or Scopus indexed.

Stage 5 – International Conference (Optional)

  • The scholar should attend one international conference either by offline or online on his research relevant area will be an added advantage to the completion of the Doctoral Degree.

FULL AWARD: The PhD will be awarded when you have successfully passed all components.

Duration: The programme is designed to be delivered over four academic years for full-time, but it is also flexible in its delivery in order to accommodate part-time learning.

Delivery Method: You will receive online support  including lectures, group discussions in seminars and tutorials for Stages 1 & 2 With stage 3 & 4 only involving supervision of dissertation and thesis defence (viva).
